8th Necks suffer heartbreak in OT

The 8th grade Necks gave Sabine all they wanted Thursday night, but could not connect on a last second shot to win in overtime. White Oak tied the game in the closing seconds of the 4th quarter, but eventually only mustered 3 points in the extra period. Brock Reddic was the only Roughneck in double digits with 10 points. White Oak drops to 3-5 on the season and 2-4 in district play. White Oak travels to Gladewater next week in a pivotal district road game.

“The guys played hard, probably the overall best game of the season in terms of ball movement and turnovers. Brock played well inside, Noah Fritsche knocked down 2 big shots in the first half. This is a game in which hopefully we learn that when you have a chance to put your opponent away, you do it.”

Box Score: White Oak: 5-9-8-8-3…..35

Sabine: 5-8-4-13-4………36

Scoring- Reddic (10), Pepper (6), Sipes (5), Fritsche (4), Henderson (3), Sorgee (3), Young (2)

8th Necks fall to West Rusk

The 8th grade Necks saw the 2nd half of their season start with a rocky performance against West Rusk Thursday night. West Rusk stormed out of the gate dropping 17 in the first quarter and then stretched out their halftime lead eventually running away with a 54-29 victory. Gavin Sipes led all Roughnecks with 10 points with Trent Pepper adding 6.

“We had not seen that type of physical play all year. They crushed us on the boards. We did not help ourselves out at the free throw line either, missing 9 in the 2nd quarter alone. It was a 10 point deficit going into halftime. If we convert from the line more efficiently it’s a totally different ball potentially.”

With the loss, White Oak drops to 3-4 on the year and 2-3 in district play. White Oak travels to Sabine this Thursday to take on their familiar foe.

Box Score:

White Oak:  8-9-4-7……….29

West Rusk:  17-10-9-18…..54

Scoring: Sipes (10), Pepper (6), Sorgee (4), Henderson (3), Reddic (3), Fritsche (2), Stevens (1)

8th Necks pick up 3rd straight win

Closing out the first part of the 2019-2020 basketball season, the White Oak 8th grade boys defeated Arp 40-16. With the win, the Necks move to .500 on the season at 3-3 and 2-2 in district play. Both Trent Pepper & Brock Reddic finished in double digits on the night. Using a mixture of full court press and man to man defense, White Oak allowed single scoring in each quarter for the 2nd straight game.

“This was a good dominating win going into Christmas. We shot the ball well, moved it around well, and had very few turnovers. Going 9-23 from the line though is something that has to improve. There is going to be a game this year in which free throws will play a factor in a win or a loss. We have to continue working hard everyday, because the toughest part of our schedule will be coming over after the break.”

Box Score:

White Oak: 8 – 17 – 5 – 13…..40

Arp: 4 – 4 – 5 – 2……………….16

Scoring- Reddic (15), Pepper (11), Sipes (7), Lott (6), Henderson (2), Fritsche (2)

8th Necks cruise past Wildcats

The 8th grade Roughnecks found themselves picking up their 2nd consecutive win Monday night as they defeated Winona 44-19. Brock Reddic led all scorers with 13 on the night. La’Trell Henderson chipped in 9 & Gavin Sipes added 7 for the Roughnecks. White Oak found themselves up 19 at intermission and continued to dominate in all phases of the game in the 2nd half. White Oak travels to Arp next Monday, Dec. 16 for the final game of 2019.

“I liked the way our transition game went tonight. We are starting to understand that running the floor on makes or misses creates easy buckets. Defensively we still have some work to do, but we are continuing to improve on that aspect.”

Box Score:

White Oak: 11 – 15 – 6 – 12…..44

Winona: 4 – 3 – 7 – 5…………..19

8th Necks split at Lions Club Tournament

The 8th grade Roughnecks went 1-1 on the day at the annual White Oak Lions Club Tournament. Game 1, the Necks squared off against eventual tournament champ Brook Hill. Down 22-13 at half, White Oak struggled from the field, only mustering 6 2nd half points.

“It was a tale of 2 halves. The first half, we played as well as we have played all season. We moved the ball offensively, and had some good defensive series. The 2nd half, we just went cold. On the defensive side, we held Brook Hill to fewer points each quarter, but our offense hurt us. The score doesn’t indicate it, but we took a step forward this game.”

Box Score:

White Oak: 5 – 8 – 4 – 2…..19

Brook Hill: 13 – 9 – 8 – 4…34

Trailing after 1 quarter 6-3, White Oak’s defense only surrendered 1 point in the final 3 quarters. Both Trent Pepper and Brock Reddic found themselves in double digit scoring for the contest. The Necks home opener will be Monday Dec. 9 against Winona.

“This seemed like a game in which we came into really focused. The guys felt like they had something to prove. Once we got into our full court press, we were able to put them away midway through the 3rd.”
